What personal data do I collect and why is it collected

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site it is saved so it can be shown to other users. Also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string are retained to help spam detection.

Contact forms

The contact form generates an eMail that is sent to my contact address. This is then saved indefinitely in my private eMail inbox, which is hosted by a 3rd party (1und1). The website does not retain any copy of the data. You can request to delete any eMails you’ve sent to me.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Logfiles

The hosting provider retains server log files that includes name of the retrieved site, browser type, operating system, referrer URL and IP address. These are saved for security and debugging reasons and are deleted automatically after some time (currently eight weeks).

Analytics

I do not use tracking pixels, social media plugins or any analytics service.

Who do I share your data with

Comment data is shared with the “Akismet” service.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) is provided to the Gravatar service.

How long do I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so the software can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data saved about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is send

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Currently this is the service “Akismet”, provided by Automattic Inc., 60 29th Street #343, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA. This helps us to separate comments of real people from spam bots. For this the data is sent to a server in the USA, analyzed and saved for four days to compare against other comments. Comments evaluated as spam are saved indefinitely. The data sent includes the name, e-mail address, IP address, comment text, referrer and browser. For further details refer to the Automattic privac policy at https://automattic.com/privacy/

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
